PLACES TO EAT AND DRINK - Sal Island

You will find some of the best restaurants and bars on Sal Island, Cape Verde. There is a great choice of restaurants and bars to choose from on Sal. Beach front bars, cafe's and restaurants with speciality dishes, snacks or drinks. Restaurants and bars that are situated in the back streets may not entice many tourists but some are worth a visit.

Some shops will also have chairs and tables outside where you can stop for a drink, some beach or street cabins will sell ponch, caiparhinas, beef burgers or rolls.

The local cafe's on the main streets are popular with tourists as well as locals and expats.

Then there are the restaurants which have something else to offer, such as happy hour, cocktail hour, fantastic sea views, comfortable sofas and a great menu choice.

There are cheap places to drink or eat, sometimes the surroundings or facilities aren't top notch but the atmosphere or the food is still great.

Many of the local cafe's and restaurants sell typical favourite Cape Verdean dishes which may include tuna, fish or beans.

Click on the text links below or on the image links on the right to see where to eat and drink on Sal Island:

There are some lovely or nice places to enjoy a cocktail, happy hour on the beach or in a hotel. These are quite popular with those just wanting a relaxing drink before dinner. Some of these venues may serve food as well so you can order a meal while you are there.

Some hotels also allow you to use their restauarant even if you aren't staying there, some with All Inclusive meals for a set fee at a reasonable price.

And, of course for sports enthusiasts, there are a few venues in Santa Maria where you can also whatch football and occasionally a few other sports such as rugby. These will usually have Portuguese commentary.

Check out the restaurants and bars advertised on the right of the page by clicking on the images, then you can find out where they are located, who has has a film night, shows sport tv, where to go for Happy Hour or to listen to music. There are some also listed below in this central column.

Some will have some wonderful lobster or fish of the day. In the evenings some restaurants will have live music, so you can listen to Cape Verdean music while enjoying your meal.

Try tasty meat on skewers, salads, pasta, fresh vegetables or alternatively the unhealthy options with chips, beef burgers and cheese burgers.

There are places where you can help yourself to a self service buffet. It will depend on what is available that day, fish, chicken wings, vegetables, chick peas, pasta, salad, hot bean and churasko, chips or other meat. You choose what you want and how much of it, you then take your plate to be weighed and you are given the price according to the weight. This is a very poplular service for many business people and those who have discovered where this restaurant is positioned. It's a great venue over looking the beach and there is plenty of shade.

There are always places that you will find that you enjoy more than others, this could be because of where the restaurant is situated and how quickly you get served, whether the hot meal is actually hot, tasty, cheaper or good value for money.

There are Italian, British, Irish, Portuguese, Brazillian and Cape Verdean owned eating places, so there are many you can visit. There is also an Indian restaurant to wet your taste buds and another restaurant owner who serves some delicious fresh fish dishes, you can have a mixed fish platter and he will advise you whether that particular fish is boneless, so those who don't want to pick at their fish can choose the right fish to order.

For those who want to try cooking fish themselves, you can buy fresh fish at the pier on a daily basis.

For those with a sweet tooth, some of the cakes, puddings, icecreams, pancakes may be tempting, banana and honey crepes are really nice. Stop off at some ice cream parlours and enjoy creamy flavours of fruit and ice cream. Or even sweet and sour chicken dishes served with vegetables, chips or rice.

There are occasions where you may be suffering with an upset tummy, but this isn't always to be blamed on the food that you have eaten. We have more information about why this is: Restaurants and Bars

Some of the Padaria's will serve lovely meals at reasonable prices. Many locals eat here for a breakfast cachuppa, lunchtime or evening meals. They are very good value.

There is also an Italian bakery where you can get fresh croissants, some with a custard cream, some reasonably priced sandwiches and pizza slices.
