Santiago
Cape Verde & Santiago: Has a large international airport. The main capital City of Praia (for Cape Verde) is on Santiago.
March 08: 15 Brits living & working in Praia.
Many areas of deprivation, particularly in the valleys.
Praia is totally different to the Sal, it is more African. However, it is now seen by some as to be the place where business can be finalised.
Sucupira market is a big and bustling large outdoor market which sells mainly clothes. The market is situated in the Terra Branca area of Praia.
A number of Europeans already live and work on the island, it is not perceived as a tourist area like Sal.
Having travelled around the island, looking at developments and as a tourist it will hold some future attractions for investors and tourists.
Cape Verde , Cidade Velha: still has the whippig post. Now, a quaint village but with a very strong past, plantations surrounding it and overlooked by the Fort. It is also known for having the first Cathedral in the Tropics.
Cape Verde, World Heritgae Site : Cidade Velha, due to its links with slavery.
From Praia take the dual carriageway and tarmac roads heading toward the City of Assomada, its not as big as Mindelo and Praia, but it is worth taking some time to look around, the people are really friendly.
From Assomada travel up to Tarrafal, a lovely area with a few restaurants and hotels. Its about one and a half hours to get there from Praia, then take a restful lunch and a look at the beach, swim in the sea, see the fishermen and town foke gather to sell the fresh fish catch.
North eastern coastal road: if you have the chance, take the opportunity to set off along the coastline for the return journey from Tarrafal. Take in some of the scenery, dramatic coastlines with dark sandy bays, plantations, palm trees and coves while driving through Calheta, Santa Cruz & Pedra Badejo before heading inland again towards Praia.
Cape Verdean Rebelados still live quietly on areas of the island. On a trip with a local guide we were fortunate to be able to visit a small village and museum displaying their art work. The Rebelados beliefs keep them in their own small communities.
The scenery and experience of the lands outside of Praia may make you have a different view point of the island of Santiago.
