Hotels - Sal Island
There are some good hotels. The Hotel Riu Funana (opened in Oct/Nov 05) and its sister hotel the Riu Garopa (opened (Oct/Nov 06) is worth taking a look at, for those of you that prefer creature comforts.
The All Inclusive Riu Funana & Garopa Hotel is most definitely ‘on its own’. It’s a class apart from the other hotels on the island.
It’s hard to imagine that at on end of Sal island you have a Shanty town on the other side of Espargos, and the Riu and the other hotels at the other end of the island. It has a stage for cabaret and other performances, gym, health spa, disco, pools. Some shared facilities but with 6 restaurants for fish, buffet or meat and a Chinese. I managed to visit the hotel and was shown around by one of the staff; they had offered the opportunity to have a look on a Tue and Thur morning between 10a.m. – 12noon. We turned up around 11.15a.m. and thought at first that they were going to say they were too busy or it was too late, but we were OK. I managed to take a number of photos quite freely. We didn’t manage to get a look at the rooms though. They manage to retain their guests who don’t seem to venture out to the town areas in the evenings, it’s a shame for the town, but they probably feel a lot safer in the hotel environment. There are a number of bars and restaurants in Santa Maria that are poplular with tourists.
It seems that the Riu have people complaining of boredom, it’s not just a Santa Maria thing. Some people do not like the town of Santa Maria, they don't like getting hassled by the taxi drivers or the street sellers, they feel intimidated and so remain in the hotels. However I heard some people who stayed at the Riu complained, not about the service, but of lack of things to do on the island.
Other All Inclusive Hotels are also situated on the south of the island. They too tend to retain their guests during the evenings.
There are a number of other hotels in Santa Maria which are basic, you get what you pay for. If you have found a cheap flight from UK, you may want to do a search on the internet for hotels in Santa Maria. Alternatively you may want to try cheaper hotels in Espargos, but they at the other end of island and some distance from Santa Maria. Or look for a cheap package deal.
Have a look within the website to see what Sal and the other islands have to offer.
