Animal welfare Cape Verde
The procedure adopted by the Council to poison animals has, we've been told stopped in 2009. They used to put poison down for stray animals about twice a year. There are still locals that will leave poison down.
The Expats Cape Verde website is now providing Forums for those involved with helping or protecting animals and sea creatures in Cape Verde, on which they can promote their work such as turtles via SOS Tartarugas and Sal Animal Rescue for dogs and cats.
A new organisation has now started to help dogs and cats in Santa Maria, Sal island, the new organisation is called:
S.O.S. Cachorros & Gatos de Cabo Verde (they are on Facebook)

Refer to other articles on this website, this can be done by writing the word 'animals' or vetinary services within the search bar at the top of the page.
Please refer to the reasons within the Expats Cape Verde website - Forum.
Below is a response to an enquiry that came into our website. The response was written by Nicky from S.O.S. Cachorros $ Gatos de Cabo Verde:
Dear ..................
Thank you for contacting us through the Expats Cape Verde website.
About the dogs.....it is good to know that the 80% of the cats and dogs you can see in Sal do have an owner...but they are free to go around all the time. It is also true that the dogs that you can see around the area of the horses are mostly stray animals.
We sterilized almost each if them with our fourth campaigne of free streilization (January 2012) of cats and dogs (campaigne that we organize in order to avoid the city hall/other entities to do poisoning campaigne for reduce the number of animals....)
During our free sterilization campaigne we sterilize animals and treat them against ticks, fleas, skin desease such Mange, we deworm them, and if they are sick we give them vet care. since now a bit over 18 months , we are a group of people of different nationalities that is cooperating for improve animals situation: the name of this capoverdean association, a no profit association is SOS caes e gatos de capo verde (= SOS cats and dogs of Cape Verde)
In the plot of ground between Torugas and Dunas there are, at the moment, a very intriguing situation, very very unusual:
we are witnessing three female dogs (two have been sterilized this time, the last is still to do) joint together and in this piece of land, where are group of rocks... THEY PUT TOGETHER THEIR PUPPIES.....so that one or two mothers can always watch on the "den" meanwhile the other search for food....they have even a cavalier;-), because a male dog that have been sterilized this time, share the duty with them...it is amazing... my sister is visiting them twice per day, giving food and care, and a special two time per day treatment at the male, who has a blood desease that have to be cured by a two pills each day for 30 days treatment...we start also to find family that can adopt the puppies, originally 11.......
if you like to stay in contact with us, here some details:
